Constipation

Constipation affects 1 in 5 people in Ireland. Many people suffer from constipation on a long term or recurring basis when, really, they should not have to. We understand that constipation is not the easiest thing to talk about or seek medical help for, but there is no need to be shy as we successfully treat this all the time.

Constipation is formally defined as having less than three bowel movements per week for an extended period of time. Often constipation is just a once off or temporary issue and can be safely relieved. However, if you suffer from it on a recurring basis or for a longer period of time then finding the true cause of it is important.

    Q&A

What symptoms should I be looking out for?

Functional constipation has a few symptoms including:

Bloating Lethargy Incomplete evacuation Hard stools Irregular bowel movements

What should I do if I am suffering from Constipation?

If you are suffering from constipation on a regular basis, we would recommend that you visit your GP prior to your Dietetic appointment to rule out any medical cause. Your next step will then be to visit a dietitian to assess your diet and lifestyle.

There is a great deal of research proving that poor dietary habits and lifestyle factors play a key role in causing the most common type of constipation – functional constipation. This is where the bowel is healthy but is not functioning as it should.
