Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is a long-term metabolic disorder marked by high levels of glucose in the blood. While there are two different types, Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease - meaning it is triggered by factors like obesity, low exercise levels, poor diet, increased age or a genetic predisposition to the condition. Type 2 occurs more commonly, with 95% of all those diagnosed with diabetes having Type 2.

Q&A

What symptoms should I look out for?

As Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition, meaning that it develops slowly over time, you may not experience any symptoms at all. Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes include:

  • Peeing more than usual, particularly at night
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Feeling very tired
  • Losing weight without trying to
  • Cuts or wounds taking longer to heal
  • Blurred vision

What should I do if I think I am at risk of or have Type 2 Diabetes?

It is important to visit your GP if you think that you are at risk of Type 2 diabetes for a diagnosis. People who have Type 2 diabetes can produce the adequate amount of insulin but are resistant to it.

Our hormone insulin is used to help glucose (sugar) enter blood cells, which means those who are resistant to insulin do not process the blood glucose correctly, and so the glucose remains circulating in the bloodstream and causes a spike in the level of blood glucose. This is dangerous, as high levels of blood glucose causes damage to the blood vessels and can cause further complications, like diabetic foot if left untreated.

Your next step will be to visit a Dietitian who can help you to manage your condition through diet and lifestyle.

How Can Spectrum Nutrition Help?

During your initial consultation, your Dietitian will assess your diet and lifestyle. The overall aim of diet therapy is to educate and show you how to manage diabetes for life. Your treatment may involve weight loss and a low GI or low sugar diet aimed at helping you to lower your blood sugar (glucose) levels to healthy ranges.

Your Dietitian will also carry out a complete nutritional assessment, taking a diet history, body composition analysis including weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat percentage, lean body mass, waist to hip measurement and more.

You will receive:

  • A starter meal plan tailored to you
